The Department of History, first chaired by Dr. Li Chang, initiated its formation plan in June of 1998, and accepted its first undergraduate class for the academic year of 1999-2000. Under Dr. Chang’s leadership, the department focused its course plan and research on the three core areas of Eastern Taiwan, Pan-Pacific regional studies and relationships between society and culture. More importantly, the department has endeavored to serve as a bridge between its students and academic research institutes, government-run archives and local cultural centers of Taiwan.
